There is no such thing as a dysfunctional system; the system is working perfectly to produce the results it's getting.

That's one of my core beliefs for helping people and organizations change. It's jarring, because it challenges the popular notion of "dysfunction," but it's also uncomfortable, because...

...if the system is working perfectly to keep getting the same results, then every element of the system is somehow, to varying degrees, contributing to those unwanted outcomes. Every. Element.

Yes, that means you. If your family keeps showing up late to events, you're somehow part of the problem. (Even though you're always ready on time. Read the story in ScreamFree Marriage about my wife choosing to respect my lateness as a choice, while making her choice to go ahead without me. Even though we only had one car.)
